Nucleos’ mission is to promote a more just society through education and training. We do this using technology to make meaningful learning experiences more widely accessible to humanity, and helping people to use this learning to engage with society in more pro-social and productive ways. We live in a world that is driven by technological progress. The forefront of technology seems to move ahead at an ever accelerating pace - commercial space travel, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, de-carbonization of everything.
But there is nothing inherent in technological progress or growth that ensures that this growth will benefit all of humanity, or lead to a better future. There is nothing inherently humanist about technological growth - and new technologies that expands humanity’s capabilities and powers can fuel dystopian futures just as well as utopian ones. The forefront of technological growth is utilitarian - it seeks to maximize the amount of good for all, roughly adding together how well off everyone is, and seeking to maximize that number. This does not lead to a society that is inherently just.
We can reach a utilitarian utopia that is great for many but truly terrible for many others. To lead to a truly great society, we must also ensure that those who are the least well off and have the least access to opportunity also share in the incredible technological benefits. In other words, we must not just accelerate human capabilities through technology to create the best world and future for humanity, but also ensure these technologies are also developed that extend these benefits to people who need them the most.
Education and training are truly transformative. Education helps people to develop a sense of their self and their relation to the universe around them, and expand their abilities; it is our ability to think, speak and create that makes us human. Training helps people to realize how they can relate to others in a pro-social manner, connecting their abilities with wider society in a productive manner. Nucleos’ vision is that the benefits of education and training are extended, made accessible, meaningful, and relevant for everyone, but particularly to those who have the least access, and could benefit the most.
Ensuring everyone moves forward as we progress as a species, and that we expand our empathy and compassion and humanity in tandem with our technological capabilities are critical to ensure we live in a world that is truly getting better for us all.
Nucleos is incorporating as a public benefit corporation, to enshrine our mission to promote a more just society through education and training as part of our corporate charter and DNA. This is important, as it will enable us to move beyond a company that just provides technology, to one that ensures that the technology we are providing delivers pro-social value to people who need it the most, in a manner that is driven by a perspective on justice that holds that we need to ensure that those who need help the most receive it.
There have to be things that inspire us, that move our hearts, as we reach to the stars and crack the codes of life and intelligence and forge boldly ahead. We support an accelerated future and believe that technology can make everyone’s lives better, but that it is critical to also ensure that technology specifically supports those who might otherwise be left behind in this process. Join us in our mission!
